Nwankwo Kanu (born August 1, 1976) is a former Nigerian professional footballer who enjoyed a celebrated career as a skillful and unpredictable forward. Known for his flair, close control, and calm finishing, Kanu made a lasting impact at Arsenal and became one of Africa’s most iconic footballers.

Early Life
Kanu was born in Owerri, Nigeria, and began his football journey at Nigerian club Federation Works before moving to Iwuanyanwu Nationale. His performances at youth level quickly drew international attention, and in 1993, he starred for Nigeria in the FIFA U-17 World Championship, helping the team win the tournament.

Club Career
Kanu joined Dutch giants Ajax in 1993, where he won the Eredivisie title three times and was part of the squad that lifted the UEFA Champions League in 1995. He later moved to Inter Milan in 1996 but was sidelined by a serious heart condition. After undergoing successful surgery, he made a remarkable return to football.

In 1999, Kanu signed for Arsenal, where he became a fan favourite for his technical skill, cool demeanor, and knack for scoring important goals. He scored a famous hat-trick against Chelsea in 1999, turning a 2–0 deficit into a 3–2 victory. During his time at Arsenal, he won two Premier League titles and two FA Cups, contributing in key moments off the bench or as a starter.

After leaving Arsenal in 2004, he joined West Bromwich Albion and later Portsmouth. At Portsmouth, he enjoyed a late-career resurgence, scoring the winning goal in the 2008 FA Cup final and becoming a cult hero at the club.

International Career
Kanu earned over 80 caps for Nigeria and scored 13 goals. He was part of the Nigeria team that won the gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, famously scoring two goals against Brazil in the semi-final. He represented his country in three FIFA World Cups and was twice named African Footballer of the Year (1996, 1999).
