General Information

Lee Dixon (born March 17, 1964) is a former English right-back best known for his long and successful career with Arsenal. A key member of the club’s legendary defence, Dixon was admired for his consistency, tactical intelligence, and professionalism. He was part of an era that brought sustained success to Arsenal, both before and during the early years under Arsène Wenger.

Early Life
Born in Manchester, England, Dixon grew up a passionate football fan and began his career at youth level with Burnley. His professional debut came with Chester City, followed by spells at Bury and Stoke City. His performances at right-back began to attract attention, and in 1988, he secured a move to Arsenal.

Arsenal Career (1988–2002)
Dixon joined Arsenal in January 1988 and quickly established himself as a regular starter. He became a key part of what would become one of the most iconic and effective defences in English football history, alongside Tony Adams, Steve Bould, and Nigel Winterburn — all marshalled under the leadership of goalkeeper David Seaman and manager George Graham.

Under Graham, Dixon was known for his solid defensive work, positional awareness, and ability to support the attack when needed. He helped Arsenal win the First Division title in dramatic fashion in the 1988–89 season, with the team clinching the championship on the final day against Liverpool at Anfield.

Dixon remained a mainstay at right-back as Arsenal continued to collect silverware. He was part of the side that won the league again in 1990–91, followed by FA Cup and League Cup victories in 1993, and a UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup triumph in 1994.

When Arsène Wenger arrived in 1996, Dixon adapted seamlessly to a more modern, attacking style of play. Despite being in the latter stages of his career, he thrived under Wenger and contributed to Arsenal’s domestic double in the 1997–98 season.

Dixon retired in 2002 after making over 600 appearances for the club in all competitions. His final season saw him win a second domestic double, finishing his career on a high with Premier League and FA Cup medals.

International Career
Dixon earned 22 caps for England between 1990 and 1999. Although his international career was somewhat overshadowed by competition in his position, he remained a respected and dependable figure when called upon.

Playing Style
Dixon was a traditional right-back known for his defensive discipline and decision-making. He timed his tackles well, rarely lost focus, and was comfortable on the ball. Though not a flamboyant player, his reliability and team ethic made him an indispensable part of Arsenal’s success across two decades.

Post-Retirement
Following retirement, Dixon became a respected football pundit and analyst, known for his insightful commentary and understanding of the game. He has worked with major broadcasters including BBC, ITV, and NBC Sports. He also remains involved with Arsenal as an ambassador and commentator on club history.

Legacy
Lee Dixon is remembered as one of Arsenal’s most consistent and loyal servants. As part of the club’s famous back four, he helped define a defensive era that laid the foundations for future success. His professionalism and quiet leadership made him a fan favourite, and his legacy remains firmly rooted in Arsenal folklore.
