General Information

Viv Anderson (born July 29, 1956) is a former professional right-back best known for breaking racial barriers in English football and for his composed, athletic performances at the highest level. He enjoyed a successful spell at Arsenal in the 1980s and was the first Black footballer to play in a competitive match for England’s senior team.

Early Life
Born in Nottingham, England, Anderson came through the youth ranks at Nottingham Forest. He made his senior debut in 1974 and became a vital part of Brian Clough’s legendary Forest side that won both domestic and European honours. His performances there earned him widespread recognition and national team selection.

Arsenal Career (1984–1987)
Viv Anderson signed for Arsenal in 1984, becoming the club’s first major signing under manager Don Howe. His arrival brought experience, leadership, and attacking flair from the right side of defence. Over three seasons at Highbury, Anderson made more than 120 appearances and contributed to the club’s growing stability during a transitional era.

Though Arsenal did not win major trophies during his time, Anderson’s consistency and professionalism left a lasting impression. He was a key figure in the development of younger defenders at the club and helped lay the groundwork for the team’s future success under George Graham.

International Career
In 1978, Anderson became the first Black footballer to play for England in a full international match, making history in a game against Czechoslovakia. He earned 30 caps between 1978 and 1988, featuring in multiple qualifying campaigns and tournaments. His inclusion was a landmark moment in the fight for racial equality in sport.

Post-Arsenal Career
After leaving Arsenal, Anderson played for Manchester United, Sheffield Wednesday, and Barnsley, continuing to compete at a high level well into his 30s. He later served as assistant manager to Bryan Robson at Middlesbrough and was briefly involved in other coaching and ambassadorial roles.

Playing Style
Anderson was known for his pace, stamina, and reading of the game. As a modern full-back ahead of his time, he frequently joined attacking plays while maintaining defensive discipline. His reliability, composure, and professionalism made him a standout in every team he played for.

Legacy
Viv Anderson is celebrated as both a top-level defender and a pioneering figure in English football history. His contribution to Arsenal was marked by consistency and class, but his broader legacy lies in his role as a trailblazer for future generations of Black footballers.
